We’ve all connected with a character on television for one reason or another, whether as a best friend or a family member—sometimes a character really proves themselves worthy of our love. In honor of Mother’s Day, here’s a list of my top five favorite mothers of television.
5. Martha Rodgers from ‘Castle’
Martha has been there for Castle his whole life; from helping him to raise his daughter Alexis to keeping him safe from the superspy antics of his father, Martha is one fabulous parent.
4. Joyce Summers from ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’
It’s not easy being the mother of the Slayer, but Joyce was always up to the task of understanding her daughter, even when she found out about things that go bump in the night. She was always acting on Buffy’s best interest, especially when the teen-with-the-weight-of-the-world-on-her-shoulders didn’t quite understand what it truly meant to be an adult.
3. Cersei Lannister from ‘Game of Thrones’
Cersei may be a rotten character when it comes to all but her children, but she will make any and all sacrifices for them. She is a tactful queen and an even more passionate mother. You do not cross Cersei Lannister, especially when it comes to her kids.
2. Rita Bennett from ‘Dexter’
Rita did everything that she could to protect her children from the big bad world, even while suffering from a terrible case of PTSD. What transpired in the fourth season is the single biggest heartbreak I have ever had as a television viewer because Rita was my ultimate hero.
1. Lynette Scavo from ‘Desperate Housewives’
Lynette was my favorite Desperate Housewife; she and Tom had their problems but she never once scorned her children or treated them with disrespect (here’s looking at you, Bre). Even in the direst of circumstances (a gun shot wound, having breast cancer, or going through a divorce), Lynette was a powerful and loving force in the lives of her many children.
I would love to hear your list in the comments! Happy Mother’s Day, TV Lovers!
