The Voice – Top 10 Results Recap

I’m beginning to resign myself to this being the country season of ‘The Voice’. Danielle Bradbery is dominating iTunes and Holly Tucker somehow placed 31st on iTunes despite a woefully boring performance, while ridiculously talented Judith Hill and Sarah Simmons both wallow in iTunes mediocrity. Oh well. All hail The Voice: Country Edition!

Who’s going home tonight? iTunes makes it pretty clear: Kris Thomas is a stone-cold lock, and Josiah Hawley seems a strong canidate as well. Let’s see how it plays out.

-THIS IS THE VOICE! Why is The Voice airing on Daft Punk album release day?? Shouldn’t this be a national holiday for all music-related shows???

-Siri’s twin brother Carson Daly somberly welcomes us to the results show, and introduces Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert for an acoustic performance dedicated to Oklahoma. Really nice.

-Here we go. Not a whole lotta drama in this results show, I have to say. I would be floored if anyone but Kris and Josiah go home. On merit alone, it should probably be Kris and Holly, but Josiah’s weak take on Coldplay has me feeling no outrage over losing him.

-Shakira and her team take the stage for the first time this season. Why has it taken this long to get them together? I don’t know. Anyway, fiercly-protective Shakira has to be feeling a little better about her team’s chances after Sasha Allen’s strong showing last night, because in an hour Sasha will be Shakira’s only contestant left.

-VIN DIESEL AND MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ ARE HERE! They’re promoting Fast 6, of course. Then VIN DIESEL INVITES EVERYONE IN THE STUDIO TO THE PREMIERE OF FAST 6 AFTER THE SHOW! This is great. Can Vin host the show next week? Seriously, how good would he be?

-Interview time. Shakira’s still mad about Usher criticizing Kris. I think she hates all the other judges. Usher admits he’s nervous for the eliminations and says his contestants are like his singers. Once again, settle down Usher.

-Confessional! Including Hillary Scott, Sheryl Crow, and Pharrell this time! Pharrell creeps everyone out with his Willy Wonka talk, Michelle does an adorably bad puppet show, and the elder Swon Brother continues to prove that he is more talented in every way than the younger one.

First saves! Advancing to the top-8 are…

Danielle Bradbery. Because, duh. She’s established herself the clear favorite to win this season, based on iTunes results.

Judith Hill. She’s so great. We’re yet to see her have a really big iTunes week though, hopefully that changes or else top-6 might be Judith’s ceiling.

-Break for Team Blake performance. It would’ve been kinda cool if during the first saves announcement, Carson had just declared all of Team Blake safe. It’s a foregone conclusion anyway, much to my chagrin. But hey, Holly’s actually singing an upbeat song! It’s a miracle! She’s actually really good. It’s 100% perplexing why she has only sang slow, emotional ballads so far. I mean, it’s working I guess, but still.

Announcement number two! The next artists advancing to the top-8 are…

Michelle Chamuel. She’s a voting force, and quite honestly might be Danielle’s biggest challenger this season.

Sasha Allen. Contemporary is key for Sasha. Shakira needs to keep her singing radio-friendly songs, because from this point forward there won’t be any margin for error.

-Usher, Josiah and Michelle take the stage for a vibey take on “Your Look”. Josiah’s shaky to start, but Michelle comes in strong. Then Usher comes in and destroys everyone. LET YOUR TEAM BREATHE, USHER!

More saves! Moving on is…

Sarah Simmons. Amazing last night. Just amazing. Unfortunately, that didn’t get her anywhere near Danielle on iTunes, so I don’t think she’s winning this season.

-Here’s Team Adam with “I’ve Got the Music In Me.” Adam’s had an amazing team this season, but the fan voting has me worried for how many will make the finals. Rooting for Sarah and Judith to get there, at least. Fun performance, mostly because these three can really sing!

Advancing to the top-8 is…

Holly Tucker. C’mon Holly, give us ONE upbeat performance this season. Just one. It’s all I ask.

As usual, we’re rushing the final announcement so the judges don’t ramble on too long. Our final two singers advancing to the top-8 are…

Amber Carrington. Despite a sub-par week, Amber was never at any real risk.

The Swon Brothers. Yep. Not good at all this week, but it’s a very country season of The Voice.

That means the following artists are leaving us:

Kris Thomas
Ranked #21 out of 48 following auditions.
Ranked #12 out of 16 entering the live shows.

Oh, Kris. I loved, loved, loved his audition, and had massively high hopes for him. But if I’m being honest, he hasn’t had a good moment in over a month. I’ve written this before, but he is Shakira’s biggest failure this season. His final performance is a perfect example: Kris ABSOLUTELY has the voice to sing “Adorn”, and in my opinion it’s exactly the kind of modern R&B song he should’ve been singing all along. But he was visibly nervous, and even in rehearsals appeared uncomfortable with the song choice. That’s on him, of course, but the talent was there and Shakira couldn’t coax it out of him. A missed opportunity.

Josiah Hawley
Ranked #15 out of 48 following auditions.
Ranked #10 out of 16 entering the live shows.

There’s a major gap between what Josiah thinks he’s good at and what he’s actually good at. Whenever given the opportunity, Josiah veered towards rock music (Coldplay, Muse), where he doesn’t have the dynamic voice to add anything to the songs. It’s not that he does a bad job with them, but his version of ‘Clocks’ sounded like good karaoke. But a couple weeks ago, when he sat down with an acoustic guitar and sang something soft, his charisma and smokey vocals really shined. That was his ticket to the finals

  1. Your comment I blame myself. I did vote for him on Facebook but I didn\’t download his song until the next afternoon. What kind of fan am I? As far as Coldplay, I listened to \”Clocks\” at least 10 times and then Josiah\’s song about 15x and I just genuinely prefer Josiah\’s version. Me to rock may be you to country. I just don\’t understand why Josiah is not a good rocker but I don\’t like rock. But when you start speculating on country, I totally get why people (read: me) keep voting for BOTH Swon Brothers. I just really like Josiah. I was sad for real when he left. Two co-workers said bye to me when they left and I looked like someone whose dog just died for the rest of my work shift. I agree with you about Sasha. She just won\’t come out of Broadway + Church and it boggles my mind. But Jennifer Hudson did the same thing and looked how her career came out. Thing is I started liking J-Hud when she did \”Spotlight\” because she was forced to not sing like there was a choir around her. Maybe Sasha will go on to do the same thing. I\’ve been outspoken enough about Shakira. Everyone on The Voice Fan page hates me (not that I give a damn). LOL
