FX & USA Continue to Boost Comedy Lineups

FX announced on Wednesday that Billy Crystal is returning to the small screen in a new comedy “The Comedians.” FX placed a pilot order for the series starring the actor/comedian.   He will be fairly comfortable in his role, playing a big-time comedian.  His character is reluctantly paired up with a younger/edgier comedian for a late night sketch show.   Gets me thinking about a possible series with Bill Cosby and Tosh.0…maybe not.

Writer/director Larry Charles, known for “Seinfeld,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and the movie “Borat,” will direct the pilot and is one of the creators of the series.  The comedy is based on a Swedish show of the same name.  If FX orders the series it will be picked up for 2014.

Wednesday’s announcement from FX follows other new comedy news from basic cable competitor USA, which is building its own comedy lineup around syndicated episodes of “Modern Family.”  Today USA greenlighted the pilot “Divide & Conquer,” which adds to  previous orders for new comedies “Sirens,” “Playing House,” and “Love is Dead.”
